Why doesn't natural Asian hair dye well?

My friend and I have just used Feria hair dye. Color: 67 Rich Auburn. She just wanted to do the tips or longer layers of her hair, and I applied a generous amount to the specified places. and did the procedure correctly.. but the results were. to put it frankly, sucky. the red hardly showed up, even in the back. Answers please?

Why doesn't natural Asian hair dye well?

Could be the dye. I work in a Beauty Supply store and I've had numerous people come in saying that the boxed dye you get at drug stores just sucks. I recommend trying to find a beauty suppy store (I work at Sally's Beauty Supply) and buying some professional brand dye. You have to buy the color and developer, but the results might be a great deal better.

As for "Asian hair not dying well", it's just not as porous as most caucasian hair. Black hair has the same problem. You may have to leave it on longer, just keep spot testing to make sure it's not frying the hair.

To the answer below: Permanate hair dye actually lifts hair color out of the hair shaft, so while it may not come out as bright as someone with blonde hair, it should still dye it if the dye is strong enough and left on long enough. If they were using Semi-permanents, then they'd have a problem because those don't lift any color out.

...i may be wrong here, but i think the reason why the red doesnt show up is because Asians have black hair. Caucasians have lighter hair so the colour shows. so to get the red you want, you'll have to bleach black hair and then dye it with the colour?
