To cornrow any hair, you are going to have to start out by sectioning your row. Cornrows can run in any direction, or make a pattern of your choosing. To a novice though, I suggest that you start with a basic cornrow that goes from the forehead to the base of the head.

Divide off a section of hair about 1 inch wide. Put the hair you are not currently working with into ties so that it won't drift over to tangle in the hair you want to work with.

Put a product on this row of hair. I would suggest a bit of styling gel. You want to give yourself more of a grip than some hair can provide naturally. Take up a 1 inch section from the part closest to the forehead. Divide this piece into 3 sections. Make your first plait (left over middle section, then right over middle section). From now on you will pick up a small piece of the remaining section as you move down the hair. Try to always pick up enough cross-section of the 1 inch row that you always stay level with the plait.

Pick up a small section of the row with your left hand, and add it to the left section, then fold this over the middle section. Pick up a small section of the row of hair, add it to the right section, and fold this over the middle section.

Continue plaiting in this manner until you reach the nape of the neck and have used all the hair in the sectioned row. Plait normally until you reach the end of the hair and finish off with a closure. The best closures to use are small pieces of clear plastic they make for this purpose. Some people "melt" the end to close it. I don't recommend this as it ruins the hair.

Section off another 1 inch wide row of hair, running beside your first cornrow. Use a hair tie to keep the remainder of the hair away from that which you want to work on now.

Proceed as for the first cornrow.

Cornrowing the hair is basically the same as french braiding, only you are using small rows of hair at any given time, instead of the hair on the whole head.
